“A teacher who is attempting to teach without inspiring the pupil with a desire to learn is hammering on cold iron”

This quotation from Horace Mann prompted the composition of the following lines:

The Old Sculptor

Chisel in one hand
Hammer on the other
With shivering fingers
He chips and chisels.

Contours change
Features emerge
He pauses and gazes
At the half-done work.

B’tween the past and the present
An aeon has passed
Yet the sculpture, glimmers not
Nor pines for perfection

Hands numb, bleached in shame
At the present , helpless he stares.
